In an endeavor to contribute significantly to the national demand for raw materials in the textile industry, Prisons Farms Department has been actively engaged in cotton production since the inauguration of this delegated mandate by H.E the President in October 2016.
This visionary project commenced at UG. Prisons Farm Orom Tikau. During the period under review, the set target was 6,000 acres, cultivation covered a substantial 5,145 acres across 40 prison farms Countrywide.
The annual average cotton production, totaling 2,963 bales, reflected a productivity rate of 0.58 bales per acre.
This achievement translated to UGX 2.37 Billion in Non-Tax Revenue (NTR), with the price per Kg ranging between UGX 1,500-2,800.
As the Prisons Farms Department looks ahead to 2025, the ambitious goal is to cultivate 10,000 acres of cotton, emphasizing a sustained contribution to the nation's economic growth.
While cotton may be considered a low-value crop in terms of gate prices, its impact on national development is significant.
The multifaceted contributions include robust support to industrial growth in the textile sector, the creation of employment opportunities, a substantial annual revenue generation (NTR), and the valuable earning of foreign exchange.
